I sat outside, patiently waiting for the guys to come out. Ari had dashed back inside, muttering about a list. We had a tentative new friendship, Ari and I. She was incredibly big-hearted and saw absolutely no fault in any of her boys. Any of her boys, including Connor. And they all worshipped her. I mean, it was obvious why. She was beautiful, she was generous, and she was just so good. It wasn’t even an act. She was just a naturally nice person. And if that didn’t make you feel self-conscious, she was also humble. She just didn’t know how saint-like she was.

Matt had explained the whole Ari and Connor thing, then the Jay complication, and the eventual Colton and Ari relationship. I understood why she and Colton were so openly in love, they had worked to get there. And I knew why they had felt comfortable in front of Connor, because Matt had told me he had been so wrapped up in Corey that Colton and Ari were relaxed. Connor had apparently given them his blessing, and Ari had forgiven all his past transgressions.

Which is where I think she went wrong. She saw him happy, she saw him happy for her, and all other things faded away. Matt said when Connor began anger management, he would only talk to Ari or Matt’s mom. Honestly, these guys were all so smart, but man, sometimes they were dumb where it mattered.

Of course he was going to fall in love with Ari again. Jesus, I was in love with Matt, wholly and completely, but even I had a crush on Ari. The girl had it all. I just wished she had more of a cynical side. I itched to shake her slightly and point at Connor and ask her, seriously? I had done this with Colton, and it hadn’t been my place to do it, but I thought he had been blind to his brother’s fault. He was not. I had heard Matt say it before, and I realised it was true: nothing got past Colton Dawson. I felt privileged that he included me in his inner circle.

I thought about yesterday. I hadn’t even flinched when I took his hand. It meant nothing, it was like when Theo took mine. Of course, Theo was Theo, and Colton was…not. I had seen Annie’s look, and before he could hide it, I saw Matt’s face too. Not that Matthew Landers would ever feel self-doubt about his relationship with me. I mean look at me and then him. He came out of the house then, pulling on a beanie hat and laughing at something Theo said, and I smiled. How in the name of all that was holy did I catch him? I saw him look for me, and he smiled that lazy smile that made me want to peel all his clothes off him and lick him all over. Claiming him. If you licked it, it was yours, isn’t that what they said?

Matt opened the door and got in the SUV.
